TMJ Diagnostics
& Treatments in Reston, VA

TMJ stands for Temporomandibular Joint and TMD (Temporomandibular Dysfunction) is not one disorder, but refers to a group of conditions, often painful, that affect the jaw joint and associated muscles when the joints do not work together correctly.

Treating
Temporomandibular Joint Disease (TMJ and TMD)

Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) occur as a result of problems within structures of the jaw joint. Sufferers of TMJ often grind or clench their teeth while they sleep due to stress causing sore muscles, jaw pain and migraines upon waking. Their jaw may also click, pop or lock. Besides preventing you from feeling refreshed after sleep, orthodontic relapse and skeletal problems with the bite can result from not treating TMJ.

When there is a problem in the functioning of the joint on one or both sides—if you experience pain when you move your jaw, pain in your ears or face and neck, or other similar issues—you could have TMD.

Dr. Calkins provides a comprehensive TMJ exam, using advanced imaging to create three-dimensional perspective of the joints through MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), the gold standard in medicine for imaging, to see the soft tissue and bones of the face and can explain recommended treatment options.
